Watermelon Slice

This resin watermelon slice has handpainted seeds and rind. Each slice will be unique.

You will see that watermelon is included as a part of the Soul Food Collection (watermelon chunks) and as a standalone slice here. That is because the watermelon has significance in both Black and Palestinian history.

In the US, “before it became a racist stereotype in the Jim Crow era, watermelon once symbolized self-sufficiency among Black Americans. Following Emancipation, many formerly enslaved Southern Black Americans grew and sold watermelons, and it became a symbol of their freedom.” The National Museum of African American History and Culture

In Palestine, we also see watermelon being used as a symbol of resilience. According to Al Jazeera, “the watermelon is perhaps the most iconic fruit to represent Palestine. Grown across Palestine, from Jenin to Gaza, the fruit shares the same colours as the Palestinian flag – red, green, white and black – so it’s used to protest against Israel’s suppression of Palestinian flags and identity.”

50% of proceeds from watermelon slice sales will be donated to Kinder Relief whose primary goal is to provide comprehensive assistance to the vulnerable children, addressing their unique challenges arising from the ongoing conflict and crisis. Kinder Relief is evacuating critically ill children from Gaza.

Due to the handmade nature of the items, color variations and imperfections will exist. The resin pieces are non-toxic and made with FDA food-safe resin. Best for ages 3+ and up. The size and shape of some items could pose a choking hazard, so children should use with adult supervision.
